Name of The Village
Cridling is probably an old singular formation of a person’s name Cridela with –ing. It is mentioned in Yearly Yorkshire Charters which dates back to 1155-77 and other publications through centuries to become Cryd(e)lyng Stubes in Parish Register of Darrington of 1614 and Cridlinge Stubbes in Yorkshire Archaeological Journal from 1598. ‘Stubbs’ is a reference to tree stumps remaining after felling during the clearing of woodland.
